The Truth About Kydex: Is It Safe for Your Gun?
Kydex holsters are everywhere in the concealed carry world. If you’ve shopped for a holster recently, chances are you’ve come across this durable, molded material more than once.
But with popularity comes questions and concerns. One of the most common we hear:
“Is Kydex safe for my firearm?”
In this post, we’re cutting through the noise to give you a clear, honest answer about what Kydex is, how it interacts with your gun, and whether it’s the right choice for your everyday carry setup.
What Exactly Is Kydex?
Kydex is a thermoplastic acrylic-polyvinyl chloride material originally developed for aircraft interiors. Today, it's a top choice for firearm holsters—and for good reason.
It’s:
- Lightweight
- Moldable under heat
- Tough enough to maintain its shape under pressure
-
Resistant to moisture, heat, and scratches
Most Kydex holsters are vacuum-formed around a specific gun mold, giving them a precise fit with strong retention and consistent reholstering performance.
Common Concerns About Kydex Holsters
Let’s address the elephant in the room. There’s a lot of chatter about whether Kydex can damage your firearm. Here's what’s real—and what’s not.
Will Kydex Scratch My Gun?
Possibly—but not in the way you think.
Most surface wear attributed to Kydex actually comes from dirt or grit inside the holster, not the Kydex itself.
Kydex is a rigid material, and repeated holstering can cause slight cosmetic wear at contact points over time. However, the effect is usually minor and purely cosmetic—nothing that impacts performance or function.
Tip: Keep your holster clean and ensure it fits snugly to avoid friction hotspots.

"Does it feel like those old leather holsters? I just can’t wear stiff Kydex all day."
That’s a question we hear all the time—and honestly, we get it.
One of our customers put it best:
“This is the first Kydex holster I’ve actually forgotten I was wearing. The cushion makes it feel like a soft leather backer but with all the security of Kydex. It’s the best of both worlds.”
The Clinger Pad adds a plush layer of comfort between you and the holster—so instead of plastic digging into your side, you get smooth, sweat-resistant padding that molds to your body. It still locks your firearm in tight and protects your trigger like only Kydex can, but now it feels like something you want to wear all day.
So if you've ever thought, “I love Kydex, but I miss the comfort of leather,”—this is your solution.
Is Kydex Safe for My Gun’s Finish?
Yes. Kydex doesn’t chemically react with any firearm finishes—polymer, blued steel, cerakote, or stainless.
It’s also heat-resistant enough to handle normal carry conditions, even during hot summer days or intense training sessions.
If anything, Kydex holsters are safer than leather when it comes to protecting your finish, because they don’t absorb sweat, oils, or moisture that can corrode metals.
Will Kydex Lose Its Shape?
Not likely. One of Kydex’s greatest advantages over leather or nylon is its shape retention.
- It won’t stretch over time
- It won’t collapse when your firearm is drawn
- It offers consistent retention, even with thousands of draws
That means safer reholstering and more reliable trigger guard coverage—two critical features for everyday carry.
Why Kydex Is Ideal for Everyday Carry
There’s a reason professionals, instructors, and experienced carriers choose Kydex:
Consistent Draw & Retention – Molded fit delivers a clean, repeatable draw every time
Moisture Resistance – Won’t absorb sweat or rain like leather
Easy to Clean – Wipe it out with a cloth, and it’s good to go
Custom Fit – Designed for your exact firearm, down to the trigger guard and slide serrations
Secure Clips – Stays put during sitting, walking, and even running
And let’s not forget that satisfying “click” you hear when holstering—your cue that your firearm is locked in.
When Kydex Might Not Be Right for You
While Kydex has clear benefits, it’s not for everyone in every situation.
- Some carriers prefer the softer feel of leather on the body
- Deep concealment under light clothing may require hybrid holsters with fabric-facing surfaces
- Kydex can be unforgiving if not well-designed—cheap holsters may have rough edges or poor fit
That’s why the design and craftsmanship of a Kydex holster matter just as much as the material itself.

What Makes a Kydex Holster Truly Safe?
Not all Kydex holsters are created equal. Look for:
- Full trigger guard protection
- Polished, smoothed interiors to reduce friction
- Retention adjustments
- Properly molded for your specific gun model
- Sturdy clips or loops that anchor to your belt
-
Ergonomic shaping for comfort and concealment

I purchased 4 of your Holsters’s when they first came out and I love them they are very comfortable to wear all day and I usually forget I have it on these are great holsters and I have had no issues with them marking up my gun the comfort cushion makes it a pleasure to wear all day long. Thank you Clinger for making such a great holster!!!
Excellent article. Covered several concerns. Thanks
I have two other of your holsters. When will you produce one for the new Taurus 58 in .380?
I’ve been using Kydex holsters for nearly 15 years for concealed carry and have to chuckle when I hear someone claiming a plastic holster can ‘damage’ a gun’s finish.
Biggest thing for comfort of a Kydex holster is proper fit and adjustment, cant and location etc. I have not tried the Clinger pad as IMHO it could have the same issues as leather – sweat retention etc. I’ll probably break down and get one some day but no real hurry.
