The S&W M&P 9 M2.0 Compact (geez that’s a long name for a pistol) is Smith and Wesson’s compact version of the full sized M&P M2.0. It holds a couple of rounds less than the full size M&P M2.0 and has a quarter inch shorter barrel.
In other words, it conceals a bit better while still handling like a full size pistol. While carrying 15+1 rounds in a pistol having a 4-inch barrel doesn’t seem like you’re compromising much, this pistol is more concealable.
The S&W M&P 9 M2.0 Compact is being pitched as an alternative to the venerable Glock 19. The Glock 19 sells like hotcakes all year long for good reason. Concealed Carriers want a gun that holds a lot of ammo but is easily concealable. Plus, they don’t want it to weigh as much as full-sized Beretta 92FS.
Since this is being touted as direct competition to the Glock 19, a compare and contrast seems appropriate.
First, let’s look at the similarities:
- They’re almost exactly the same dimensions
- They both have 4 inch barrels
- They both hold 15 + 1 rounds
- They are both about 24 ounces
- Both accommodate larger mags from full-sized counter-parts
At first, everything looks pretty similar.
But, let’s look at some of the differences:
- S&W M&P 9 M2.0 Compact has a more traditional grip angle (18 degrees)
- Price – M&P 9 -$439 / Glock 19 gen 5 $539
- S&W M&P 9 M2.0 Compact comes with 2 mags. Glock comes with 3.
- S&W M&P 9 M2.0 Compact includes grip extensions. Glock doesn’t
- S&W M&P 9 M2.0 Compact comes with Lifetime Warranty / Glock has a 1-year warranty.
It looks like price and ergonomics are the biggest differences and S&W wins here.
There are many other attributes that make the S&W M&P 9 M2.0 Compact shine as well.
It comes with metal 3 dot sights. Plastic sights just aren’t durable. Smith and Wesson puts pretty decent sights on their M&P line right out of the box. That’s more money you can spend on ammo rather than replacing parts on your pistol. A good pistol should be ready to shoot great right out of the box before you start replacing parts!
Multiple Backstrap Sizes
There are 4 sizes of backstrap for those shooters with really big hands and those with fairly small hands. The sizes will be s, m, ml. l. Also, the backstraps are extremely easy to change by simply twisting the plug and pulling it out. This is a sweet feature to really dial in the trigger reach to fit your hand. You’ll shoot best if the pad of your trigger finger is flat against the trigger. The multiple backstraps help dial this in for you.
Holster selection is already widely available for this great shooter. However, S&W M&P M2.0 Compact Holsters from Clinger Holsters are the best you can get. Not all S&W M&P M2.0 Compact Holsters will conceal this size of pistol easily like Clinger Holsters do.
Includes Extended Mag with Sleeve
This is an awesome added benefit. You get a flush fitting 15-round mag & the extended mag with a sleeve. The extended magazine holds 2 extra rounds putting total capacity at 17+1. Now that’s impressive firepower. I’m sure most people will carry the shorter magazine in it while concealing it in a Concealed Carry Holster.
Just looking at the S&W M&P 9 Compact you can immediately see that it’s ergonomic before you even pick it up. The grip has a general oval shape, the thumb depressions look deep, the grip texturing looks grippy, and the trigger guard is undercut to make room for your middle finger. However, keep in mind that there’s much more to the ergonomics of this groundbreaking pistol. The above list is just what’s blatantly obvious before you pick it up.
For instance, after picking it up, you’ll notice that all the controls are incredibly easy to reach without shifting your grip. You’ll also notice when racking the slide that the slide serrations seem to grab your hand while you’re pulling the slide back.
Another accolade is the balance. You don’t hear a polymer-framed pistol referred to as well-balanced that often, but the S&W M&P 9 Compact deserves the praise it has earned. It balances really well in the hand.
Great Grip Texturing
The S&W did an amazing job on getting the texture right on their newest pistols. It really is much less likely to move around in your hand. This will come in handy if you need to shoot the pistol with wet or gloved hands.
New Size for M&P Line
S&W M&P 9 Compact is a bit shorter than the S&W M&P 9 Full Size in barrel length and grip height. However, it’s just a bit bigger than the previous smaller M&P 9 pistol, the M&P 9 Compact. The previous M&P 9 compact held less rounds in its shorter grip and had a barrel length of 3.5”
This new size should go over well with concealed carry folks who want to carry a bigger gun but don’t like to carry full-sized pistols.
Four Sizes Initially Available
There will be two 9 mm pistols available. One will have a manual safety, one will have no safety. In addition, there will be two 40 pistols available (with & without the safety). Most S&W M&P M2.0 Compact Holsters should fit all four sizes as long as they are built to accommodate the safety.
The trigger feels great. The reset is really noticeable. Plus, the trigger break is very short and predictable. The trigger is much improved.

Field stripping the S&W M&P 9 Compact can be accomplished without pulling trigger. This is an amazing safety feature! The grip tool can be used to toggle the trigger disengage. You would then flip the lever and release the slide. You would just flip the toggle back up when re-assembling.
