S&W 1911 3-Inch
The Smith & Wesson 1911 3-inch, also referred to as the Pro Series Subcompact, is a tad smaller than the original Colt Officer’s model released back in 1985. The Officer’s Model had a 3.5-inch barrel and an overall length of 7.5 inches. The SW1911 Subcompact has a three-inch barrel and overall length of just 6.9 inches. Oh, and it’s significantly lighter. The original Officer’s model weighed in at 34 ounces, while this carry model is just 26.5 ounces. It’s obvious this pistol was intended for personal defense and concealed carry, and it fits great in our S&W 1911 3-inch concealed carry holsters.
The S&W 1911 sports a Dovetail white dot front sight, and fixed white two-dot rear sights. It is a .45 ACP 1911 design with a magazine capacity of 7+1. This pistol also has an oversized external extractor to help avoid potential malfunctions. It has rear, vertical, cocking serrations and sports a three-hole curve trigger with an overtravel stop. It comes with a full length guide rod and a half bushing.
According to reviewers, to field strip this gun, just remove the magazine (everything is unloaded, right?) and pull the slide back until the takedown notch is above the slide stop lever. Now the slide stop can be removed. Once that’s done, the slide, recoil spring, guide rod, barrel, and half-bushing will slide right off. The recoil spring and guide rod lift right out, and you can slide the barrel out of the frame. No tools required.
This pistol also possesses some classic 1911. It has a generous beavertail that prevents hammer bite, even with this compact pistol size. The grip safety has a solid memory bump, so it engages positively with no conscious effort. These features combined with the compact size makes this an ideal concealed carry pistol that fits in our S&W 1911 Kydex holster.
