Colt 1911 Defender

Colt introduced the Defender in 2000 with a barrel half an inch shorter than their Concealed Carry Officer’s (CCO) pistol. 1911 shooting enthusiasts were astonished because of the Defender’s workability with a short, three-inch barrel. Now, the Defender is more reliable than ever, as Colt has learned from its mistakes and put that knowledge into developing a compact 1911 either in .45 ACP or 9mm. These pistols work well in our Colt Defender concealed carry holsters.

Concealability

With the three-inch barrel, the Defender already lends itself to concealed carry, especially in our Colt Defender Kydex holsters. However, it goes further, as Colt took the Officer’s short butt and put it on the Defender, gaining maximum concealment with a flush-fitting floor plate magazine. This allowed Colt to improve the maximum cartridge count to a total of 8 rounds (including one in the chamber) in the .45 Defender—the 9mm has the ability to have a total of 9 cartridges (with one in the chamber).

The Defender has a beavertail grip safety, a manual safety lever and a passive firing-pin safety. It also comes with a fixed, three-dot Novak Low Mount Carry sights, which prevent snagging in a Colt 1911 holster while still providing supreme target acquisition. The Defender has a consistent trigger pull of about 5.6lbs with a short, light take-up, that reviewers describe best as a “roll.”

Other Features

Depending on which Colt 1911 you select in store, you may have a stainless-steel slide and frame with standard grips, or a blued slide and frame with standard grips.

The dimensions for the grips have been standardized for years, so finding grips to suit your preferences isn’t too difficult. Many reviews and competitive shooters selected Hogue’s wraparound rubber grips with finger grooves. This may seem tedious or incongruous for concealment, but those who selected a .45 Defender enjoyed the added recoil control the Hogue grips provided. Browse our Colt 1911 Defender 3-inch Kydex concealed carry holsters above.
